Stop trying to prove God exists

Not sure if these are going up everywhere, but here in the South, there are some billboards appearing that are causing quite a stir. The one I’ve seen people talking most about shows a girl writing a letter to Santa. It says, “Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is to skip church. I’m too old for fairy tales.”

Christians are going crazy about it. Arguing and fighting on Facebook, Twitter, and all other social media. It’s so sad. Why does something like this get believers in such a frenzy?

This is one of the main reasons Christians get bashed. Arguing, fighting, judging people over silly stuff like this.

There are several reasons I believe this is so silly.

1) We don’t need to prove that God exists.

If we could prove the existence of God to everyone, there would be no need for faith. We aren’t supposed to live by feelings, but by faith. We can’t allow what people don’t see to influence what we do see. It’s that simple. We prove it by walking it out.

2) Debating with unbelievers only causes more division.

I used to argue and debate with people all the time on social media. In the last year or so, I’ve come to understand that I was only doing those things to prove something. I would fight to be right. That’s crazy. My life is no longer mine. I was bought with a price. I don’t have rights anymore. It’s called denying myself and becoming love. Arguments and judgement don’t bring people to Christ. Love does.

3) We shouldn’t be so easily offended.

This is related to number two above. The Bible says to be imitators of God. God is love. We are to become love. Love is plainly defined in 1 Corinthians 13. One of the big attributes is that love doesn’t seek it’s own. Or as the Message version says, “Love cares more for others than for self.” We would only be offended with something like this if we’re still holding onto our self, our flesh. How can something that has died be offended, hurt, or moved in any way? Do we think God is up there on the throne rocking back and forth, biting His nails, and trying to figure out what to do about these billboards? Of course not. Then why should we?

4) We need to live the Gospel.

For too long, the world has heard what we believe. It’s time we start showing them. If we’re fighting with everyone, why would anyone want what we say we have? Christians are known more for what they stand against, than Who they stand for. And by that, I don’t mean we have to picket, boycott, or fight against anything that isn’t Christian. If we stand for Christ, we walk in love.

Church, we need to redeem the time because the days are evil. Is our time better spent arguing over billboards, lifestyles, and evolution, or giving Jesus to everyone we meet?

Let’s stop the debates. We know Who God is and what He’s done for us. We don’t have to prove that to the world.

We just need to love the world.

  1. I think anytime I am fighting to prove anything, I am working from a deficit. I am defensive, egotistical, and behaving in a superior manner..as if I Know and must inform those, not in the know. I find that believing and having faith affords me the ability to sit with and in the Knowledge and if you disagree, I’m cool with that. My faith is not dependent on your faith or your belief of my faith. I’m already doing find because I’ve found Grace.

  2. “This is one of the main reasons Christians get bashed”!!! You had me laugh when I read that! Mercy me 🙂 🙂 It’s just funny because you rattle it off like a fact 🙂

This is a great post, & I agree a lot. Live, love, be. You don’t need to prove anything to anyone. What you know, you know; you believe, you believe; what you feel, you feel; what you learn/experience etc etc. Just live, just love.

    HAPPY NEW YEAR 🙂

  3. Encouraging post! God is the author of salvation, and He is saving people out of the world, from all over the world! Christians don’t need to fear, His kingdom isn’t going anywhere, it is ever increasing, Isa. 9:7. Thank you for the reminder!

P.S. Thanks for the follow, looking forward to following you as well. It’s very encouraging for me as a new blogger to get a like or follow from someone who is a good writer with an established blog and following. Thanks again!

  4. I agree with allowing people to believe what they want to believe, but that specific billboard is an attack on Christianity in my opinion. We can express our beliefs without mentioning another’s beliefs. You can promote an atheist gathering the way we promote religious gatherings. You can promote your beliefs without throwing shade at another’s beliefs. But, the fact that this ad specifically said church and not mosque or synagogue in this season that the world has pegged as the observance of Christ’s birthday is an attack in my opinion. Don’t get me wrong I do believe that a lot of Christians are way too sensitive, but this example that you provided does very much seem like an attack.

    1. Also, most people aren’t trying to be convinced of anything. I believe we should just be the lights that God told us we should be and that will draw in those who are interested. It was Solomon’s wisdom that impressed the Queen of Sheba, not his tracts or his preaching. We should be confident in the gifts given to us by God and allow our difference from the world to spark their curiosity

  5. I’m not a Christian or any religion for that matter, but i believe everyone should believe what they want. if your offended by someone’s belief or lack of belief in god, that’s fine. However, if you try to censor opinions you disagree with, that is where i draw the line. You cannot take away someone else’s right to express themselves because it offends you. Your right does not trump theirs no matter how fervent you are in your belief or lack of belief.

Even though I’m technically an atheist, i really enjoyed reading your stuff and think your views on this are commendable.

  6. “Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” 1st Peter 3:15-16

Sadly too many christian’s (myself included) get upset and we start giving our reasons without the “gentleness and respect” that the Bible requires. When I see that I am losing track of the required gentleness and respect, and when I do I know its time for me to shut up.

I think such Billboards would provide a good teaching moment for my kids. I would teach them that we are Christians but not everyone in the world is a Christian. We have found through history that it is best that everyone can live by their beliefs and express their views so you will find lots of people with beliefs different than ours. Get used to it.

  7. Wise thoughts, Chris, we get hung up on “aidiophora” I am in dialog with a number of atheists, and they simply love baiting Christians to see them froth at the mouth! I never give them that privilege. I stay calm reasoned focused on the inconsistencies in their arguments. It really bugs them to find rational intelligent Christians!

  9. Hi Chris,

I just found your blog after you followed mine on WordPress. I am in COMPLETE agreement with everything here, and it’s been something I’ve been saying for years. Throughout college (and shortly after), I had a couple friends who were hardcore against religion, especially Christianity. I would often be asked why I wouldn’t try to disprove the things they said that were offensive, and prove that there was a God. I would tell those people that my life, the way I act, the way I live are far more of a testimony to these friends than me getting angry and trying to prove the unprovable every time they tried to get me razzed up.

I think as Christians, we often take offence to these things because billboards, public call-outs of Christianity as a fairy tale make us feel like they are pointing this jab directly at us, but it’s not. It’s not personal, and most of these people feel very differently about Christians they know personally, as people. It’s them generalizing just as much as Christians often generalize non-believers and atheists.

  10. This post is so wise. These kinds of provocations are designed to put Christians in a bad light. Let’s not take the bait. I do have one caveat. I have children, and when I see something like this, I do call it to their attention so that we can talk about it and why I feel it’s disrespectful. Several years ago there was an ad for the NBA with a bunch of players dressed in white and the slogan, “The Second Coming.” My son had this poster in his room, and I did talk to him about it.

I think what you say about God being love is a powerful message, and one that would receive better results and responses than a lot of the fear mongering and judgement that is circulating. Thank you for the positivity. 😊

  13. I agree with your opinions to a certain extent. I feel that it is our job to actually share the faith with people, just as Jesus sends out disciples to share the good news. The only problem is that now in our time, it isnt done with peace and love. It’s such a sad thing that we need to convince people that God is real, that Jesus died and He has risen. I strongly believe that words doesnt have weight nowadays because he who preaches doesnt live out what he is preaching.

Continue to speak your mind and be bless. The Lord be with you and protect you.

  15. Reblogged this on shantalaimee and commented:
I normally don’t discuss religion with strangers because I have a “to each his own” mentality. But anyone that would pay top dollar for a billboard to send a message like this does not have good intentions in any way. With so many negative things going on in the world today I could think of a thousand other POSITIVE messages someone could advertise on a billboard. This just goes to show how sinister someone’s intentions may be, and how America, a country founded by Christians, is pushing God out of the picture little by little.

    Like

    1. Actually the people posting the message believe they are sending a positive message by educating people not to blindly follow an imaginary figure and never learn to question things for themselves. You’ve just drawn a conclusion based in prejudice and not fact, or even personal experience.

The same argument could be levelled at all the billboards I see as I head out to the country, saying “Repent or burn in hell!!” etc. etc. I don’t think they have good intentions because I see them as recruiting more followers using fear, and raking in cash from church donations made by people thinking they’re getting closer to heaven by donating. Where else would they get the money to pay top dollar for a billboard to send a message like that?

  16. I’m an atheist, and I think the world needs more messages like the one you give in your blog post. It’s very true, the truth will stand for itself. And if Christians want to win any friends, they have to show themselves as a positive bunch, not a homphobic primitive bible bashing sort that cram “religion” down your throat.

  17. Amen. But it angers me that EVERY DAY America is pushing God away little by little in so many ways. I have met a surprising amount of atheists lately, whom are also very nice people, and while my husband tries to convince them and argue I just tell him to let them be. There’s really not much you can do but focus on your own faith and teach your kids the same values. I haven’t seen a billboard like this up here in PA but it makes me sick to my stomach thinking about how anyone would pay big money to advertise something like this. Kind of makes you go “hmm”, what are their intentions? Definitely not positive in any way.

    1. “Definitely not positive in any way.” Wow. You are so sure about that aren’t you? Have you tried researching their intentions and basing your decision on evidence, or are you just following another “belief”?

      1. Its completely hipocritical. If you criticize CERTAIN Christians of being “homophobic, primitive” and cramming religion down your throat, then posting BILLBOARD about God not existing is the same thing! Think about it. To each his own. Did you even read the entire post?

        Like

    2. I mean… the whole point of a billboard is to spread a message, and inherently has some intention behind it. Did you not even think that far ahead before making that statement? Do you realise every time we see a Christian billboard, you can level exactly the same argument at it?

But this shallow level of thinking is quite typical of Christians in my experience, you’re not taught to question things and learn information for yourself.

  19. I agree wholeheartedly with your post, and I do try my best to live that way, but I’ll be honest with you, at 57, I’m still confused, and I’ll never say I get it, if I don’t. I fully believe, by faith in the Lord, that I have been called, and saved, for over 35 years, but by any logical means at my disposal, if I listen to almost any Pastor I’ve ever met, I’m a pagan, and I guess they should know. And I listen to them, carefully, sincerely, and every time, they leave me convinced that I’m unsaved, and then when I get home, and get into my Bible, or get into prayer, my communion with The Spirit is excellent, and I’m left feeling like I’ve betrayed Him again. So I don’t attend organized church any more, because after all, I can get the same message by reading one of those billboards you mentioned, or listen to another You-tube lecture on the sinners prayer (there’s a bunch of those). I guess what I’m saying is I don’t need a church to tell me I’m a pagan, there’s plenty of atheists that will do that without asking me to leave them an offering for the privilege of being told that. Maybe someday the church will remember that we were supposed to set an example that would make unsaved people want to have what we have. So how come a pagan like me has to be doing that with a strong enough leading from the Holy Spirit that at least 4-5 people this year alone asked me for and received their first study Bibles. With the exception of 2 of them, I don’t know if the others followed through at all, but I just have faith in the Lord for that, I had done all that I could. With my disability, I can’t get close enough to people to teach them. I do know the other two followed through to the point of becoming regular church-going people, and again, that’s all I can do for them. Now I know giving away a couple Bibles doesn’t amount to anything really, but I used to think of it as doing something for the Lord, until I found out yet again that I’m a pagan. Anyway, I’m rambling, I guess I can still get worked up about things of the Spirit. Don’t know why, if He doesn’t know who I am.

  21. I’m an atheist. I don’t try to “get in the face” of believers. But most believers have no idea how often believers get in my face. And, in general, I do not dare tell people that I am an atheist. People often react in a very negative manner.

One time I told a woman that I am an atheist. She had previously propositioned me–even though I was married, and she knew it; I I had politely declined the offer. I told her that I was married, and her response was, “Well, I hope you’re not teaching that to your daughter.”

Many people tell me that they’ll pray for me–an offer that makes it sound as though I’m suffering from some illness.

Atheists are often treated as second-class citizens in the United States. The billboards are an attempt to speak to other atheists. Because we atheists are quite reasonably reluctant to speak out, we can feel very alone in our beliefs. Billboards like these can encourage atheists to speak the truth of their beliefs.

If you drive through any town, you will almost certainly see a plethora of signs that, in one way or another, proselytize for churches. I have often seen signs telling me that I and other atheists are going to hell. No one seems to question those signs.

My sense is that many theists would prefer that we atheists simply not speak up. But this is the United States. We do have the right of free speech. If you think that we atheists should simply be quiet, ask yourself: what if everyone else asked you to be quiet about your religious belief? Would that seem fair to you?

Let me add that Mr. Martin seems very reasonable. If other believers embraced his message, then we atheists would probably not see the need to erect billboards that acknowledge our existence.

Finally, let me note that, as an atheist, I have no quarrel with anyone who has chosen to believe in a deity, no matter which one he or she has chosen. I respect your belief. I ask only that you respect my decision. If you insist on imposing your belief on me, then please do not be surprised if I speak up. And let me note, too, that, if you’re in the ascendant group, you will very likely not be aware of all of the messages sent on behalf of your beliefs.

Let me say right now that I love you. I believe God created all of mankind in His image. That gives us a value and worth that this world can never take away. 2. Eeek! I have to say that the audacity of the woman who propositioned you, knowing you were married but in the same breath told you she hoped you weren’t teaching your beliefs to your children, is a huge part of the reason a lot of people have issues with believing today. The hypocrisy of it all. That’s not what being a child of God is about. It’s unfortunate that these are your experiences. While, as believers, it is our duty to spread the word but it’s all about HOW you spread and share it. It’s no one’s duty to shove it down your throat or condemn you. Regardless of what you believe, I pray that you have more “pleasant” encounters with people who believe from here on out.

  22. Chris I read the comments often. Sometimes its impossible to believe the words some display towards Christ. A deep seeded hate that’s very disturbing. So disturbing that it could only be the work of the devil. The devil wants to have a heyday on your mind. He wants us to put somebody before God. This non-belief gives him the playing field. Some of these sites give him a playground. You are correct, we need not partake in this type of sin. I bare witness to The Lord and His Word. My reply is always the same. The Word comes from God the Spirit and delivered by His Son. There is no other Word, written to believe or trust with so much love. Any other Word is misinterpreted in flesh. I usually have to rebuke the comments in the name of Jesus! With a final display as Jesus would say, “Away with you Satan! For it is written, “You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve”, Matthew 4:10 then again, ” You shall not tempt your Lord God. Matthew 4:7. Jesus overcame Satan by the Word of God only. There was no argument. Stay still and don’t get into discussion with the devil. Use your scripture, pray for them and carry on to enjoy your day 🙂
Many blessings to bestow upon you, God Bless!

  28. Chris – this was great. It is so simple and yet we overlook the basic fundamental principle that Jesus taught…LOVE! Just like you saw in the post you commented on a couple weeks ago that I posted…we have to meet them where they are at and be a relationship that shows the love of Christ and not verbally judge.

One of the main problems is that it has to START WITH US! This season is a great reminder…just preached on that and how instead of focusing on all the negativity and material aspects what we need to do this Christmas is COME BACK TO THE MANGER! That’s where it started with Jesus and where we need to begin once again.

Also, when I get it up – take a look at the song I am covering today in my post. It really teaches a lesson about looking at ourselves first before we try to get to others.

O.K you are atheist, good for you, look at that other guy that guy is a Muslim, good for him too, but I bet my behind that they would never put up a sign like that in a Muslim country mostly because their heads would be cut off. NOt saying all Muslims, but just saying the double standard there is.

  32. How do you decide though, where to place your faith? A muslim places his/her faith in the belief that God doesn’t have a son and would never take on a human form. A Christian however, places faith in the belief that God has a son and did take on a human form. Which one do you think is “right” to have faith in and why?

No, they prayed, loved, served and boldly declared the good news. Then they relied on the work of the Spirit to do the rest. Sounds like a better plan to me.
