Believers gotta stop freaking out

This was my Facebook status earlier today.

Why should it truly matter if people say Xmas or Happy Holidays? If we’re fighting that, it just reveals that we are moved by what people do or say. Stop shouting “Keep Christ in Christmas” and “He is the reason for the season.” If we’re saying those things while judging others, our witness is a big fat zero. Live a life that demonstrates God is on the throne of your heart. Walk in love.

As believers, we get so caught up in what this world is doing, that we tend to forget about why we’re actually in the world.

In Matthew 24, Jesus talks about the end of the world, the last days. Verse 12 says,

And because iniquity shall abound, the love of many shall wax cold.

I’ve always assumed that verse is talking about people who aren’t saved.

What if He’s talking about believers?

It’s a very sobering thought. In simple terms, “iniquity shall abound” means there will be a lot of sin. Well, look around. It’s pretty obvious that’s happening.

And the more people sin, the more judgement they receive. And sadly, it’s usually from those claiming to be Christians.

It’s becoming less and less shocking to read through comments about a controversial topic on someone’s blog, and the worst remarks are left by Christians. Argumentative, arrogant, holier than though, and sometimes just straight up spewing hate towards others.

It’s sad.

We spend so much time being right, that we forget God has created us to love people.

I brought up some points on Tuesday with my post, Stop trying to prove God exists.

We have to stop taking things so personal. We act as if  homosexuals, atheists, Buddhists, and agnostics are our problem. News flash: THEY AREN’T. Our biggest problem is us. We have to get over us, and follow Jesus.

If God acted like us and allowed everything bad on this Earth to affect Him, He would be a complete basket case. I’m pretty sure He would have to be admitted to a psych ward. He isn’t capable of freaking out, not just because He’s God, but because He is love.

If we are walking in relationship with our Father, we aren’t going to care what people say or do. It shouldn’t ruffle our feathers or influence our attitude in any way. We don’t have to jump on the boycott bandwagon or write a million letters to our senator.

If you squeeze an orange, you are going to get orange juice. If you squeeze an apple, apple juice. Too often, a Christian gets squeezed, and everything but Jesus comes out. Hurt, anger, frustration, judgement.

Let’s not allow ourselves to be hurt by the world. Let’s hurt for the world, and show them Jesus.

    1. Dear Chris:

Perhaps you are right we do argue over some very small things. I prefer to call it Christmas because it helps me remember this time of year is not just about material things. I do not use Xmas because to me personally it just does not inspire in me this important time that we should show love for others as well as our own families.

  1. Thank you for this. Spreading more love in the world is such a worthy vision to rally around. Actions of love are so inspiring and attractive while the fear and judgement you mention simply shut people down and turn them away. Love this!

  2. Your statement about oranges and apples is great! What’s the point of being a Christian if it only shows when things are going our way? God’s plan is that his love would change us radically, so that when we are under pressure, we ooze Jesus! If anything else comes out, you’ve got some work to do.

  3. If we would focus more on Jesus’ directives to love our enemies, feed the hungry, defend the rights of the oppressed, etc. and less on making sure one of His titles is used in connection with a holiday hijacked from the Mithras cult, the world would be a better place. And we would be better people.

    1. Our beloved Lord Jesus Christ, the only begotten Son of God, Who is pure Spirit and hence far beyond material ramifications, entered space and time at a particular point for thirty-three years to redeem lost mankind… this has nothing to do with any pagan cult, but is Love pure… which, as you rightly point out, we ought to have flowing through us every day of our earthly pilgrimage: God’s pure love, feeding the hungry, clothing the naked etc. , without expecting worldly rewards, because our only reward is the privilege of faith, the loving relationship with our sweet Redeemer. 🙂

  4. I like what you’ve said here, great post. I’m working up to writing a few posts around these issues too. Love is always the way forward. It’s taken me a while sift through the christianity I was sold to find what is actually true. One thing I know for sure is that love is always the answer.

  5. This is a great post… “Christians” are so busy trying to be sooo different, they start judging others for having different standards and beliefs.
I personally like to emphasize the CHRIST in Christmas, just because that’s what I do. I pray that God would convict me when I do things that don’t lead others to Him. 🙂

  6. I loved this post Chris. Thanks for reminding all of us! I too have cringed in some of the LinkedIn “Christian Groups” where people ask questions or start Discussions ( I think they are baiting people), people comment and then are just viciously attacked or argued with tooth and nail about something that is so none consequential. So many times I have stuck my head out only to remind people who they are or who might be reading all the vitriol. Then I get blasted. So mostly I don’t say anything anymore.

  7. Absolutely! You are spot on! I worked at a church for 4 years, you would cringe at all the deplorable ungodly behavior I witnessed. Eye opening. I think of the Ghandi quote”I like your Christ, I do not like your Christians. Your Christians are so unlike your Christ.”

  8. Wow this is right on brother! I was raised to worry and fight about these things that many Believers take so seriously. Caring about what the world cares about. If I am in love with my home, why do I care what the neighbor is doing with theirs. A relationship with Christ is so simple, let Him do the work. Its all about Grace! But it is so hard for us to let go. We think that if we’re not shoving an issue, we’re not doing Gods work. God has shown me that it is the exact opposite. When we drown our selves in His Love and Grace, we do more with a greater impact. It is so amazing to know that there are other Believers that believe in a relationship with Jesus rather then trying to be a look at me Christian. Thank you for your words of wisdom brother!

  9. What a refreshing post. I’ve often thought the same thing. I hate how Christians get so distracted by petty arguments while neglecting the main thing–Love. Sometimes standing on a soapbox is easier than picking up the soap and bowing down to wash some feet in love. There’s less glory in serving than sermonizing.

  10. Its a natural thing that some Christians can only digest their known truth. For me it’s a way of life to listen other people views where by the transmission of any fact or suggestion is relevant. We all must put away that little thought of scepticism and learn from each other. the Elohim bless you, SELAH.

    1. Oh yeah, I understand what you’re saying completely. To me, Jesus is more than a Christmas or Easter story anyway. I celebrate Him every day I wake up on this Earth. Thanks for stopping by. God bless.

  12. Agreed!!! Twindaddy wrote about this today… I’m glad we are encouraging one another to chill out… God can defend himself!!! We are call to love and that’s it. I know the heart of no man but my God does… He changes lives not my words. And sometimes, by grace, the love I show is used to affect others… what a gift He gives us!!

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays 😉
