Meet Rocky

This post is going to be unlike any I’ve ever written. I’m very passionate about spreading the love of Christ to everyone, whether through personal interactions or with my writing. That’s usually the main focus of all my blog posts. Today, I want to do something completely different.

I want you to meet Rocky.

Three weeks ago, my wife and I walked into the Rabun Paws 4 Life no-kill animal shelter in search of a new family dog. (You can donate to this shelter HERE) It always breaks my heart to walk into these shelters and not leave with every single animal in tow. I’ve never been a huge animal lover, but I don’t like to see anyone suffering or without hope. Human or animal.

They led us into the room with smaller dogs, and instantly, they all started competing for our attention. All except for one sad looking Beagle. In the middle of all the chaos, he just sat there. We then noticed he was coughing every few seconds, and we asked the staff member why.

They told us Rocky, and seven or eight other small dogs, had been rescued from a kill shelter. They had all contracted kennel cough, but poor little Rocky had it the worst. He was on the list to be put down, but thanks to the staff at Paws 4 Life, they took him into their shelter.

Because of his “cute little face”, my wife was immediately drawn to him. After a brief discussion, we knew he was the one we were to leave with.

The first two weeks were rough. There were times it appeared Rocky was dying, and we felt helpless. After a few days, we could tell the cough wasn’t getting any better, and we took him to our local vet wondering if maybe the kennel cough had turned into pneumonia. Thankfully, it hadn’t, but Rocky just needed some stronger antibiotics. Finally, after a couple days of the stronger meds, Rocky wanted to eat something.

To put it quite simply, we pretty much freaked out. It was such an overwhelming sense of relief to see him turn the corner, and start the road to recovery. Three weeks later, he is like any other normal puppy. Running, playing, eating just fine, and chewing on everything in sight.

I’m starting to understand why so many people are adamant about the quality of life for animals. I used to write blog posts entitled Everyone Has a Story. Well, every dog has a story too. If you’re looking for a pet, please visit your local animal shelter and adopt. If you don’t want to adopt, then please consider donating money. It takes a lot for these places to operate, and most are just non-profit with no big time funding. They rely on donations to care for the animals they take in.

You can always help save a life, even if it isn’t a human one.

Here is a small picture gallery of Rocky.

  1. Very heart warming. My heart breaks when I see suffering, and I’m warmed by rescue and love. My first blog ever about my yorkie, juniper, and how much God fascinates me through this little girl. I feel like people who don’t like dogs are missing out on a whole world of joy!

  2. Love this post and your precious pictures of your new furry baby! As one who loves her pup, your post struck a chord with me. My husband and I are amazed at how often God has used our pets to tender us to Him, remind us of His grace, and to connect us with people we would never have met otherwise. Our blessing….Our furry gift…

  3. What a beautiful little guy! So glad he is doing better. We have adopted all 3 of our dogs from various organizations like the Humane Society , etc. and they are the best pets anyone could ask for. Congrats on the new family addition.

  4. Rocky’s close up photo and story touched my heart. We lost our dog named Joy 4 months ago but each tıme I look at her photo I’m taken back to all the fun (and sad) tımes. Joy had a lıttle frıend named Harry – a jack russell he was from a rescue home. Our neıghbours told us that Harry had lıfted them out of the grıef of losıng some members of theır famıly.

So yes way to go doggıes…we love you for soooooo many reasons.

  5. Way to go, I feel as you do. About three months ago my wife and I went to our local humane society and took a kitten home with us. We’ve done this several times in the past and it just makes you feel good, about the whole experience, and the animals make you feel good too! We too wish we could take more home, but we can’t. Way to go!

  6. Both of us were rescued and Mom feels very strongly about trying to help animals. Rocky was very lucky that you walked into his temporary home and took him to his furever home. Thanks so much for helping him. He looks like he is lots of fun. We love dogs and Mom says we act like we’re both dogs. đŸ™‚

  7. What a heart-melter on a gray Monday morning! Thank you! đŸ™‚ I am so glad your family saved Rocky and am sure you all will have so much fun together. We have two small dogs, one is a rat terrier and other is chihuahua. Just this Saturday my daughter and I went to a shelter to donate some blankets and fell in love with a bulldog beagle mix named Big Mac. We wanted to give him a home, but later we found out he was adopted the same day. Good for him! đŸ™‚ Anyway, we also have a hard time not bringing a new puppy home every time we visit a shelter… There are just pure love and joy! Thanks for letting us meet Rocky! Blessings to you all! đŸ™‚

  8. So happy Rocky is on the mend and has found a loving home… you know there’s something wrong when a Beagle doesn’t have an appetite!! He will be eating you out of house and home from now on!
